The 1861 census shows that John was still living at home. His father was a mariner. In the 1881 census John was now living in Dorset. He was working on the Portland High Lighthouse as a 'Lamp Lighter'. The rest of the family were living in Weymouth with his wife Sarah shown to be a mariners wife and head of the family. In the 1891 census John is shown to be a mariner. On his daughter, Florences marriage certificate he is occupation was 'master mariner'. On the marriage certificate he was shown as deceased.
