The Will of

Mary WATERHOUSE (1684 - 1780)

In the Name of God Amen I Mary Waterhouse of Tonbridge in the County of Kent Spinster being in pretty good health and of a sound mind memory and understanding praised be God do make and declare this my last will and testament do follows first and principally commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker trusting in the alone merits of my Lord and Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ to have Remission of all my sins my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named as for that temporal Estate which it hath pleased God of his infinite Mercy to bestow on me I give and dispose of the same as follows I give and bequeath unto my niece Mary now the wife of Edward Winch of Ticehurst the sum of thirty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to her within one year next after my decease Also I give and bequeath to my niece Catherine the wife of John Holman of Burwash Carpenter the sum of thirty pounds of like lawful money to be paid to her within one year next after my decease by my Executors hereafter named and also the further sum of ten pounds due on Note of hand of the said John Holman dated the 30th day of May 1755 which Note of hand shall be given up Also I give and bequeath to my nephew William Waterhouse the sum of twenty pounds of like lawful money to be paid to him with one year next after my decease by my Executors hereafter named and also the further sum of twenty pounds due on his Note of hand dated the 9th March 1769 which Note shall be given up to him Also I give and bequeath to my two nephews George Tuppenny and Isaac Tuppenny and to the widow of Joseph Tuppenny to each of them the sum of twenty pounds a piece of like lawful money to be paid to each of them within one year next after my decease Also I give and bequeath to my nephew John Tuppenny the sum of ten pounds of like lawful money to be paid to him within one year next after my deceased by my Executors hereafter named And also the further sum of ten pounds due on his Note of hand dated 1st of November 1753 which Note of hand shall be given up to him Also I give and bequeath to my nephew William Tuppenny the sum of fifteen pounds of like lawful money to be paid to him within one year after my deceased by my Executors herein after named and also the further sum of five pounds due on his Note of hand dated the third of February 1770 which Note of hand shall be given up to him Also I give and bequeath to my nephew Richard Waterhouse the sum of ten pounds of like lawful money to be paid him within one year after my deceased by my Executors hereinafter named And also the further sum of ten pounds due on his Note of hand dated the 26th of March 1756 which Note of hand shall be given up to him Also I give and bequeath to my nephew Thomas Humphries of Marden the sum of twenty pounds of like lawful money to be paid him within one year after my deceased by my Executors herein after named Also having done so much for my nephew Thomas Waterhouse having put him out Apprentice I now give him the sum of five pounds to be paid him within one year after my decease by my Executors hereinafter named Also I give and bequeath to all my every one of the children of all and each of my nephews and nieces above mentioned which shall be living at the time of my deceased the sum of one pound one shilling a piece of like lawful money to be paid to them respectively within one year after my decease by my Executors hereinafter named And after the payment of all my just debts and all these my Legacies above mentioned my funeral Expenses and the Probate of this my last will and Testament I give devise and bequeath to George Courthop Junr Esquire and Catherine Courthop the Elder Spinster all my ready money and Securities for Money Mortgages Bonds Bills Credits Goods and Chattels and all my personal Estate whatsoever Lastly I appoint constitute and ordain the said George Courthop and Catherine Courthop full and joint Executors of this my last will and Testament revoking and making void all former wills by me formerly made In witness where of I the said Mary Waterhouse have to this my present last will and Testament set my hand and seal this sixth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy three Mary Waterhouse ~ signed sealed published and declared by the said Mary Waterhouse the Testator as and for the her last will and Testament in the presence of us who in the presence of the said Testatrix and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witness hereunto Edmd Latter ~ Anne Latter ~  

This Will was proved at London on the third day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty before the worshipful Thomas Bever Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Worshipful Peter Calvert Doctor of Laws Master Keeper of Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of George Courthop the younger Esquire one of the executors named in the said Will to whom Administration was granted of all an singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the deceased he having been first sworn duly to Administer power reserved of making the like grant to Catherine Courthop Spinster the other Executor named in the said will wherein shall apply for the same.

Notes for RICHARD WILLIAM WATERHOUSE:

In the 1861 census Richard was shown as working as a barrister’s clerk.  Richard started working for the Civil Service making his declaration to the crown on 13th June 1870.  His brother Henry witnessed the signature.  The 1871 census shows Richard still living in Croydon with his parents but was now working as a writer for the civil service.  His brother Alfred was living with his new wife in the same road.  The 1881 census shows that Richard is living alone in Wimbledon.  He was working as a clerk and administrator.  By the time of the 1891 census Richard had married Emily.  He was working in the admiralty as a 2nd division clerk.  In 1901 Richard and Emily were still living in Croydon but had moved house.  Richard was still working at the admiralty as a second division clerk.  A Directory for 1904 shows that Richard had moved to the Isle of Wight and was living at 1 Manor Villas, Totland.  This was just opposite his nephew William John and a few houses along from his older brother Thomas.
