When Georges parents retired to Yorkshire he stayed living in the family home on his own. His occupation in 1901 was an 'Engine Fitter'
In 1903 George joined the Royal India Marine as an assistant engineer aboard the RIMS Hardinge. In January 1904 George moved to serve aboard RIMS Dalhousie. By March 1905 George was back on RIMS Hardinge. George stayed on board until July 1906 when he joined RIMS Investigator. This had traditionally been a survey ship. On 10th June 1908 after serving nearly five years, George was granted twelve months leave to look after 'private affairs'.
RIMS Cornwallis was originally HMS Lychnis. It was transferred into the Royal Indian Marine on 21st August 1917.
