The fate of Alfred after the 1861 catastrophe is not known. The catastrophe was that Alfred allegedly went to the races in France with his brother Richard and the Prince of Wales. While there he is supposed to have lost a fortune. This meant that he lost his farm at Adgestone and Richard also ended up losing his. This led to him going mad and running away from the farm later turning up at Wickham hospital in Hampshire. His wife Jane died soon after, probably due to the stress of the whole event. His children were taken on by his bother Richard and his wife Julia.
