Notes for ALFRED HARVEY:

Lived with parents in Merstone in 1841.

1855-1861? was at Adgestone Farm (96 acres).

The fate of Alfred after the 1861 catastrophe is not known.  The catastrophe was that Alfred allegedly went to the races in France with his brother Richard and the Prince of Wales.  While there he is supposed to have lost a fortune.  This meant that he lost his farm at Adgestone and Richard also ended up losing his.  This led to him going mad and running away from the farm later turning up at Wickham hospital in Hampshire.  His wife Jane died soon after, probably due to the stress of the whole event.  His children were taken on by his brother Richard and his wife Julia.

Notes for ARCHIBALD JOHN HARVEY:

Left for France, leaving Dibgate Camp, Kent on 13th September 1915.  Archibald sailed from Southampton either on the 'SS King Edward' or the 'SS Archimedes'.  The whole of the 4th Field Ambulance unit left on these two ships.  The first port of call was Le Harve.

From here Archibald boarded a train which took him to Wizernes.  His unit left Wizernes on 16th September and marched to billets at Werkyn Farm, on the Hazebrouck - Steenvoorde Road, about 3.5 miles from Hazebrouck.  The march took about 7 hours.

On the 20th September the unit left Werkyn Farm and headed for Westourte, Belgium.  They set up a field hospital here in a girl’s school.

On the 23rd March 1916 Archibald left the front line on leave.  Reported back to the front on 2nd April 1916.

On the 4th April 1916 Archibald’s unit moved to a new position.  They set up a new hospital in Boeschepe, France.

On the 8th May 1916 the 4th Field Ambulance moved to Reninghelst.  The unit left this area and moved to the 2nd Army Training Area at Nordausques, stopping off at Steenvoorde on the 24th August 1916.  The second stage of this march took the unit to Noordpeene, on the 26th August 1916.  The third and final stage of the march took the unit through Lederzeele on the 28th August to the final destination on the 29th August 1916.

On the 4th September the unit made preparations to move again.  Reveille was at 2am on the 5th September 1916.  They moved by train travelling via Calais, Boulogne, Etaples, Abbeville to Auxi-le-Chateau.  After leaving the train the unit moved to Longvilliers, arriving at 8.40pm.  The unit were billeted in the house and barns of Gaston Machy.

On the 6th September the unit continued to move.  This time proceeding to Montrelet.  The area had been recently evacuated by the Australians and was in a disgusting state.  On the 7th September the unit moved to Herissart, being billeted in Church Street.  On the 8th September the unit moved to Vadencourt to take over the rest station there from the 1st Field Ambulance.

On the 12th September the unit moved again to the Dressing Station at Albert.  On the 18th September the unit moved via Senlis to Warloy relieving 3rd Field Ambulance.

On the 25th September the unit moved back to 'The School House' Albert, opposite the church, to take over the Dressing Station from 1 Field Ambulance.

On the 3rd October 1916 Archibald was awarded 'The Military Medal' for exceptional courage and derivation to duty.

On the 4th October 1916 the unit moved to Warloy to take over the Rest Camp and Officers hospital.

The unit left Warloy on the 9th October and proceeded to Val De Maison reinforcement camp.  The unit moved on the 10th October to Montrelet.  On the 12th October the unit moved to HEM.  Next moving to Serecourt where the billets were unsatisfactory shared out due to an error by the Brigade Billeting Officer.  On the 13th October the unit moved to Orlencourt.  The billets were the best the unit had had up to this time.  On the 14th October the unit moved on to Divion.  The inhabitants of the town were the most genial to date.  The unit remained in Divion for one day before moving onto the Rest Camp at Barlin.

The left Barlin on the 8th November 1916 for Fresnicourt.  The billets were not adequate for the winter months.  Archibald was listed as a casualty on the 9th November 1916.  He was evacuated to 6 CCS.  The reason given was 'Pyrexia of unknown origin'.  This was some sought of fever.  Archibald returned to his unit on 19th November 1916.

The unit joined the 11th and 21st Canadian Field Ambulance at Quatre Vents, via Gauchin Legal, on the 8th March 1917.

On the 1 May 1917 Archibald was ordered back to England to claim his commission.  The next mention of Archibald was when he arrived as a reinforcement on the front line with the 29th Canadian Battalion, British Columbia Regiment, as Lieutenant, on the 20th October 1917.

Notes for SIDNEY HERBERT HARVEY:

The following is taken from research carried out by Lorraine Drew.

Now that we have once again emerged victorious from a world-wide conflict, and the machinery of peace is being set in motion, we see a gradual falling off in numbers of the old familiar faces we have known so well over the war years - and, in many cases, before that.

It will be of interest to many members and ex-members of the R.A.N, no doubt, to learn that after 53 years of service with the R.N. and R.A.N. combined, Mr H (Sid) Harvey has at last severed connections with Naval Ordinance Inspection Branch, and , on the 3rd July, 1946, proceeded to his well earned retirement.

To use his own expression, “Sid” was born during the “middle watch” of 29th December, 1876, at Sandown, Isle of Wight. (Middle watch was between midnight and 4 am)

After an uneventful school life, Sid was apprenticed to Fitting and Turning at the Westinghouse Brake Co., London.

On completion of his apprenticeship, he worked in various towns throughout England and becoming fed up with this limited scope for roving, Sid decided to join the Royal Navy, which he did in 1898 as an Armourer’s Mate (2nd

Class Petty Officer).

When qualified, Sid was sent to the Experimental Party, Whale Island, for 6 months, thence to the “Apple” Squadron, which was then the training fleet. He cruised to the West Indies in H.M.S.”Calliope”, once familiarly know as

the “Hurricane Jumper”, and then joined H.M.S”Powerful” late in 1899 at Durban where he was engaged in preparing the 4.7” guns for the relief of Ladysmith and General Buller’s Force.

Sid spent about 4 months in South Africa and was returned to England for 14 weeks in hospital with a wound to the foot. On the day of his discharge from hospital, Sid went to London to meet his old shipmates from the “Powerful”, who formed the field gun’s crews for the navy and Army Show at Olympia. About 10 pm. the news of the relief of

Mafeking was received so the remainder of the night was spent in wild rejoicing. Result - another 2 weeks in bed.

In September 1900, Sid volunteered for the “Nymphe”. To digress for a moment to consult my Navy list of the 18th

June, 1902, I find that the “Nymphe” was a twin screw sloop of 1140 tons, commanded by Commander P.E.Jervaise.

The “Nymphe” had a complement of 137 officers and men and, in a commission lasting 3 years and 6 months, did not lose a single man, which was considered to be something of a record in these days.

Revolutions were the order of the day in South America at that time and many exciting happenings were witnessed.

Sid and a few of his shipmates were ashore in Monte Video one day and found themselves mixed up with Government troops and fighting for their lives.

Growing tired of this form of excitement after about 4 days, Sid and his party decided to join up with the rebels to enable them to reach the wharf and contact the ship. This they did and fortunately for them their excuse about being cut off from the ship by the fighting was accepted and they “got away with it”.

Christmas day 1901 saw them at the Falkland Islands, one of the bleakest spots on earth. In February 1902 the outward bound mail brought news of Queen Victoria’s death, just 3 weeks after the funeral. So, on a bitterly cold morning - attention all you modern sailors! - The 5” Vavaseur guns were lined up on their inclined planes and, with chocks and hand spikes in place and with canvas side screens to keep the burnt powder off the white ship’s side, a salute of

104 “minute” guns were fired. (NB Apparently the Table of Salutes has changed since those days as 101 guns are the greatest number fired at present.)

Forty to forty two days at sea were common during this commission surveying all the time, and often 6 months passed without a ship’s company seeing bread.

Down to Antarctica, Georgia Island, South and back to the River Plate in 1902 to hear of the illness of King Edward

VII. (This illness I believe resulted in the first successful operation for appendicitis.)

Ashore at Rosario, about 800 miles up the River Plate; the jack tars took charge of the side shows etc during festivities ashore and accumulated about 300 dollars each. The value of the American dollar at that time varied from 1/9 to

1/11 and, as it was the 28th of the month, and pay day was monthly, this was a welcome addition to the exchequer.

On to Buenos Aires for more festivities, which lasted for about 6 weeks, during which time medals were struck commemorating the peace between Chile and Argentina? “Sid” was fortunate enough to receive one of these medals, being one of the lucky ones selected to take part in several functions during this grand “fiesta”.

Winter of 1903 saw the “Nymphe” performing many and varied tasks off the wild, inhospitable coastline of Patagonia: -chasing seal smugglers around the Falkland Islands; surveying in and around the Straits of Magellan and all the time on “Salt Tack”.

A typical day’s menu in harbour was as follows:

0530 Breakfast -Dry bread and one pint of cocoa

1200 Dinner -“Salt Horse” (pork or beef pickled in brine) and vegetables (if any) and dry bread

1600 Supper -Dry bread and jam (if any was left in the canteen)

The above was the official meal times, but at 0800, hands went to clean and ‘stand easy’. This was unofficial breakfast hour during which time the men worked in pairs as “scrub chums” and bought their breakfast at the canteen the same applied with the unofficial supper at 1930 - also from the canteen.

The magnificent pay of a 2nd Class Petty Officer was 2/8 per day and an average canteen bill was 2/16/0 per month which meant there wasn’t much money to spare.

Little wonder that the ration of “three-water” rum was eagerly awaited each day.

In addition to his ordinary work, the Armourer’s Mate was also Electrician and “Second Captain of the Ropes” while on deck, Plumber and Blacksmith. The duties of the Electrician mainly consisted of taking care of the electric light supply to the Wardroom, which was the only part of the ship so fitted. The rest of the ship got along with candles.

In March, 1904 the “Nymphe arrived back in England after a very eventful 3 1/2 years commission.

December 1905 saw “Sid” in Fremantle in the “Powerful” and a member of the Powerful’s Field Gun Crew, which gave displays throughout the state of NSW and later in New Zealand.

During this commission in Australia, the Powerful’s ship’s company took a very prominent part in rifle and revolver shooting and Sid was always in the forefront of the successful shots, having shot in the “Kings” in Sydney, twice in the “Navy 12” and was just beaten by the late Johnnie Walker for the coveted “Navy 8”.

After this, there followed a period in the mine-layer “Latona” (the old one!) and then in the “Terrible” for Australia once again, arriving in Fremantle in January 1910. In November 1910, Sid was rated Chief Armourer and appointed to Spectacle Island under Captain (and afterwards Rear- Admiral) Cayley.

From that date, Sid’s record is a long tale of loyal and conscientious service to the Royal Australian Navy. This included Instructions of Ordinance Artificers, inspection of guns, arming of Armed Merchant Cruisers during the first

World War, gun trials and still more gun trials!

After 3 years of this kind of work, and with an average working day of 15 hours throughout, Sid volunteered for active service for the 9th time, only to be told he would be court-marshaled if he persisted any further.

World War II found him at the age of 63 and, in his own words, “feeling like a youngster of 40, repeating his record for World War I. Only this time it was even more strenuous. In the first 3 1/2 years of war, the average working day was 16 hours and 7 days per week. During this time Sid missed gun trials in only 6 D.E.M.S. ships (Defence Equipped Merchant Ships).

From 26th January 1941 to 16th October 1942, he had completed 697 D.E.M.S. ships besides attending to many duties at Spectacle Island.

But scaling up and down sea gangways, rope ladders etc from the pilot ship and merchant ships, in all weathers, became a little strenuous even for a “youngster” of 65 and, reluctantly, Sid decided to leave it all to the younger generation.

So on July 3rd 1946, after a very busy and most useful service life, covering the period from muzzle loaded guns to the atomic bomb, Sid prepared to “swallow the anchor” and rest upon his laurels.

Briefly, his record of service was as follows:

Joined the volunteers - June 1893

Joined the Royal Navy - November 1898

Joined the Royal Australian Navy - November 1911. Official Number in the R.A.N. was 72.

Joined R.A.N. Armament Depot, Spectacle Island -December 1920.

Retired from Naval Inspection Ordinance Branch -July 1946

Total Service -53 years.

In conclusion, I am sure many “old timers” and the new will join me in wishing Mr Sid Harvey God-speed and an increase in his final “series” with “No Wear!”

1855 lived Kalinda Rd, Bullaburra, NSW with Jessie, Jim and their children until his death in Mar 1957.

Enjoyed his sport. Played tennis, cricket and cards, golf when on holidays, swimming. Followed the local baseball and cricket. Was a founding director of the Lane Cove Masonic Lodge. When on holidays he loved to walk. When on long service leave in Blackheath, Sid would go for a morning walk to Meadlow Bath and back, weekend walks or day hikes with the children and often in the afternoon, the children would come home from school to find a note saying he and Mum had gone to Nellie’s Glen and they would set off to meet them. The family walked all the valleys on the blue mountains - Megalong Valley, Echo Point, Wentworth Falls, Evans Lookout, Govett’s Leap, Mt Victoria. If there was a walk to be had around the mountains, Sid would find it. When at Leura on holidays they also walked The Everglades. Lorraine remembers her grandfather walking her to school during the time (almost a year) they spent living in Bullaburra. Lorraine’s teacher was Miss Parslow and Sid would always tease and say he was coming in to say good morning to Miss Parsnip.

Of an afternoon, Grandpa would often make afternoon tea and spread the loaf of bread with butter and vegemite, then cut a paper thin slice off the loaf. They had banana passion fruit growing on a vine along the path to the toilet.

Notes for GRACE MURIEL DAVIDSON:

When Muriel left school she stayed at home and helped her mother with the family. As far as Dot can remember, she doesn’t remember her mother Muriel working for a living. She never worked as a domestic but she may have helped her father in the chemist shop while they were still living in Bundaberg.

At Christmas time, Muriel was sent a case of pineapples and a case of mangoes from May. A few years after WW!!, Muriel said not to send any more as they only ended up with 1/2 a case of each - it was presumed that railway workers had a treat with the rest. In her spare time, Muriel liked to sew, knit, embroider and read - she was a homebody. Occasionally she and Sid played cards with friends and neighbours.  On holidays, Muriel went on afternoon walks or family hikes with the family. She liked to stay at a guest house so that she did not have to cook or clean - that was her holiday not having to worry about meals and washing up.  Sunday lunch was a traditional baked dinner while the children were at Sunday school and church.  When living at Punchbowl, Keith Jones from next door always smelt when Muriel was cooking and come to Harbeys to lick the mixing bowl.

Occasionally Muriel had a game of tennis but not very often.

When Muriel was a young girl she and her sister and friend always wore their stockings when paddling at the beach with their long frocks pulled up above the ankles.

Moved to Sydney with her mother and at least Walter and Les after her father died, where Elizabeth built a new  home at Lane Cove ‘Colinton’, which is listed by the lane Cove Municipal Council as a heritage home.

Lorraine’s last memory of Muriel after she had had a series of strokes was Grandma not knowing who she was.

Notes for EDWARD LAWLER:

Attended 60 year Anniversary reunion of 450 Squadron RAAF on Saturday April 7, 2001’

In his last Will, dated 19 Apr 1956, Ted’s father Edward left the house at 456 Bell Street to Edward and Alan and the piano to Edward (was purchased, if my memory serves me correctly, in 1927 for about 19 pound). Everything else, after debts were paid, was left equally to Alan, Edward and Alice. Alice already had the house at Seaford. The witnesses were D Nicholls and Harry Bacon, Lillian’s husband.

Alan wanted to keep the Commonwealth Treasury Bonds so 2/3 of their value was also divided between Alice and Edward, who each received the sum of #311/4/4. Edward also received #42/10/- for rent for the property prior to its sale. His share from the sale of the house amounted to about #800 pound.
