Lived with parents in Merstone in 1841.

1855-1861? was at Adgestone Farm (96 acres).

The fate of Alfred after the 1861 catastrophe is not known.  The catastrophe was that Alfred allegedly went to the races in France with his brother Richard and the Prince of Wales.  While there he is supposed to have lost a fortune.  This meant that he lost his farm at Adgestone and Richard also ended up losing his.  This led to him going mad and running away from the farm later turning up at Wickham hospital in Hampshire.  His wife Jane died soon after, probably due to the stress of the whole event.  His children were taken on by his brother Richard and his wife Julia.

Left for France, leaving Dibgate Camp, Kent on 13th September 1915.  Archibald sailed from Southampton either on the 'SS King Edward' or the 'SS Archimedes'.  The whole of the 4th Field Ambulance unit left on these two ships.  The first port of call was Le Harve.

From here Archibald boarded a train which took him to Wizernes.  His unit left Wizernes on 16th September and marched to billets at Werkyn Farm, on the Hazebrouck - Steenvoorde Road, about 3.5 miles from Hazebrouck.  The march took about 7 hours.

On the 20th September the unit left Werkyn Farm and headed for Westourte, Belguim.  They set up a field hospital here in a girls school.

On the 23rd March 1916 Archibald left the front line on leave.  Reported back to the front on 2nd April 1916.

On the 4th April 1916 Archibalds unit moved to a new position.  They set up a new hospital in Boeschepe, France.

On the 8th May 1916 the 4th Field Ambulance moved to Reninghelst.  The unit left this area and moved to the 2nd Army Training Area at Nordausques, stopping off at Steenvoorde on the 24th August 1916.  The second stage of this march took the unit to Noordpeene, on the 26th August 1916.  The third and final stage of the march took the unit through Lederzeele on the 28th August to the final destination on the 29th August 1916.

On the 4th September the unit made preparations to move again.  Reveille was at 2am on the 5th September 1916.  They moved by train traveling via Calais, Boulogne, Etaples, Abbeville to Auxi-le-Chateau.  After leaving the train the unit moved to Longvilliers, arriving at 8.40pm.  The unit were billeted in the house and barns of Gaston Machy.

On the 4th October 1916 the unit moved to Warloy to take over the Rest Camp and Officers hospital.

The unit left Warloy on the 9th October and proceeded to Val De Maison reinforcement camp.  The unit moved on the 10th October to Montrelet.  On the 12th October the unit moved to HEM.  Next moving to Serecourt where the billets were unsatisfactory shared out due to an error by the Brigade Billeting Officer.  On the 13th October the unit moved to Orlencourt.  The billets were the best the unit had had up to this time.  On the 14th October the unit moved on to Divion.  The inhabitants of the town were the most genial to date.  The unit remained in Divion for one day before moving onto the Rest Camp at Barlin.

The left Barlin on the 8th November 1916 for Fresnicourt.  The billets were not adequate for the winter months.  Archibald was listed as a casualty on the 9th November 1916.  He was evacuated to 6 CCS.  The reason given was 'Pyrexia of unknown origin'.  This was some sought of fever.  Archibald returned to his unit on 19th November 1916.

The unit joined the 11th and 21st Canadian Field Ambulance at Quatre Vents, via Gauchin Legal, on the 8th March 1917.
